Description |
|
| |
An atrial septal
defect (ASD) is an opening between the upper two
chambers of the heart. Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a
term used to describe a small hole or potential
communication in the section of the atrial septum called
the foramen ovale. An atrial septal defect may lead to
symptoms such as shortness of breath or fatigue. Either
ASDs or PFOs may also be associated with strokes and
transient ischemic attacks. Recent research has
suggested that PFO’s may also play a role in migraine
headaches. This relationship is still controversial.
These holes are often easily closed percutaneously,
eliminating the need for open heart surgery. |
